PNNL - Battelle Memorial Institute Corporation

PNNL is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) ten national laboratories, managed by DOE's
Office of Science. PNNL also performs research for other DOE offices as well as government agencies,
universities, and industry to deliver breakthrough science and technology to meet today's key national
needs. PNNL currently has approximately 4,700 staff members and a business volume of $881 million.
The William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE Office of Science national scientific user facility, is located on PNNL's Richland campus. PNNL operates a marine research facility in Sequim, and has satellite offices in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C.

The Environmental Sustainability Division (ESD) conducts research and provides expertise to improve the management of natural resources and energy and to solve challenging environmental problems. The Division focuses on two key issues: Carbon Management and Legacy Waste Management. ESD capabilities include applied geology and geochemistry, hydrology, multiphase modelling, characterization and monitoring, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, ecotoxicology, and risk and decision sciences. The researchers use a suite of well-equipped chemical, geologic, soil and plant laboratories. They use the laboratories in conjunction with field experiment facilities to collect data that are integrated into models with a range of complexity matched to the problems being solved. In addition, ESD has the Carbon Capture and Geologic Sequestration Laboratory to understand key processes that control efficient and effective CO2 capture and geologic sequestration, including co-sequestration of other gases.

PNNL will contribute in modelling of reactive transport of CO2 in the subsurface for the study cases
selected by CO2CARE. In particular, using the numerical platform GS3 (Geological Sequestration Software Suite), an inter-comparison between several simulators will be carried out and the real cases will be used as benchmarks. The experts needed for this work will be provided at no cost. PNNL will also provide some expertise in mineral trapping mechanisms (study of core samples, thermodynamics and kinetics databases) and will share some results from the ongoing project of CO2 injection at the Wallula site after its completion. Finally, PNNL will provide the time of one of his scientist to participate on a regular basis to the CO2CARE project activities.
