Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) is one of the pioneers of research on CO2
geological storage and is acknowledged within Europe as a leading authority on CO2 storage. From 1993 to 1995, BRGM participated in the first European research project on the feasibility of the CCS concept, the Joule II project.

Since 2000, it has been involved in many other FP5 & FP6 CO2 European projects (SACS,
WEYBURN, CO2NET, CO2STORE, CASTOR, CO2GeoNet Network of Excellence, CO2ReMoVe, and EUGeoCapacity). BRGM is also called upon as national expert by international authorities including the IEA, IEA GHG, and CSLF.

BRGM’s research focuses on selection and characterization of storage sites, injectivity in the reservoir, integrity of seal rocks and wells, predictive modelling of the fate of CO2, monitoring methods, site behaviour, and site safety analysis. In collaboration with French partners, BRGM is devoted to preparing over the coming years, a semi-industrial pilot for CO2 storage in France in a deep aquifer of the Paris Basin. It is also involved in the Lacq pilot for CO2 capture and storage recently started by TOTAL. BRGM has a worldwide reputation for its competence in modelling the chemical interactions between the injected CO2 and the reservoir rock, and is hig  hly involved in the research carried out on demonstration sites as well as on natural CO2 fields.
