Veolia - Veolia Environnement Recherche & Innovation SNC
Veolia Environnement is the world leader in environmental services.
With operations on every continent and more than 336,013 employees, Veolia Group provides customized solutions to meet the needs of municipal and industrial customers in four complementary segments: water, environmental services, energy services and passenger transportation. Veolia Environnement recorded revenue of 36.2 billion euros in 2008.
The Company designs and implements tailored solutions for its clients that combine economic efficiency with control over environmental impacts, thereby helping to combat climate change, save natural resources and preserve ecosystems.
In 2008, the facilities and equipment Veolia Environnement managed contributed around one thousandth of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, or a total of 47.2 million metric tons equivalent CO2. Veolia are seriously engaged in combating climate change and reducing GHG emissions, and have implemented a global strategy based on:
- optimizing the technical management of facilities and equipment;
- rationalizing energy use by developing solutions designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce fossil fuel consumption;
- changing energy mixes to include renewables;
- measuring carbon footprints and developing specific offers for this;
- innovating in low CO2 emission technology, especially solar energy and biomass.
Veolia Environnement, which is already a player in energy efficiency, and the development of renewable energy, alternative fuels and all operating solutions that better respect the environment, is now committing resources and research teams to this technology as part of the combat against climate change.
Veolia Environnement began in 2005 a research program on the capture, transportation and storage of CO2 with the aim of improving knowledge and developing solutions to suit the differing sizes and types of its clients’ facilities. Potential sites in Europe were identified as part of preliminary studies to select suitable places to install Veolia Environnement pilot units for CO2 capture, transportation and storage.
The role of Veolia in CO2CARE is to bring into the project environmental expertise and experience on environmental impacts, and participate in the analysis of current practices, lessons learned from dry run applications and the analysis of field experiences. Veolia will also contribute to the development of “Best Practices” and the risk management methodology.
