TNO is the largest fully independent Research, Development and Consultancy organization in the
Netherlands with a staff of about 4,500 and a total annual turnover of about 515 million Euros. Its primary tasks are to support and assist trade and industry including SME’s, governments and others in technological innovation and in solving problems by rendering services and transferring knowledge and expertise.
TNO provides contract research and specialist consultancy, as well as grant licenses for patents and specialist software. TNO also tests and certifies products and services, and issues an independent evaluation of quality.
TNO is active in five core areas amongst which is TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, the central geoscience institute in the Netherlands, which will be involved in the proposed work. It is the innovative partner for government and industry on sustainable development, use and management of the built environment, infrastructure and subsurface. TNO is active in the international oil and gas industry, as well as the leading research institute in the Netherlands on CCS, providing state-of-the-art research on the entire chain of CO2 capture, transport and storage. The expertise involves geological characterization, reservoir engineering, geochemistry and geomechanics, risk assessment, wellbore integrity, and monitoring. TNO has been involved in many international projects for almost two decades, including the coordination of several EU research programs for CO2 storage in hydrocarbon reservoirs, coalbeds and aquifers. TNO performed site specific evaluations for (inter)national CCS projects. Currently TNO is coordinating the CATO-2 project, the Dutch national programme on CCS with more than 40 partners.
